Global Summit on Climate Change Ends with Historic Pact
Historic Climate Accord Reached at World Summit
In a historic move, world leaders gathered at the Global Climate Summit in Paris have signed a binding agreement to transition away from fossil fuels entirely by 2050. The pact, hailed as the most ambitious climate action to date, includes strict targets for reducing carbon emissions and pledges of financial support for developing nations.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres called the accord ‘a triumph for multilateralism and a lifeline for our planet.’ Key provisions include a 50% reduction in global emissions by 2030 and the establishment of a $100 billion annual fund to aid green energy transitions in poorer countries.
However, the deal faced criticism from some environmental groups who argue the timeline is too slow. Activist Greta Thunberg stated, ‘This is a step in the right direction, but we need to act faster.’ The agreement will be legally binding once ratified by national parliaments over the next year.
